Six people died and several others were left critically injured following a grisly road accident along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
The collision occurred near Konza City in Machakos County when a bus crashed head-on into an 18-seater matatu.
According to preliminary reports, the accident happened after one of the drivers attempted a risky overtaking maneuver on vehicles ahead, leading to the collision.
The force of the crash killed six passengers who were traveling in the matatu instantly. At least 12 other occupants sustained injuries of varying severity, with some reported to be in critical condition.
Rescue teams arrived quickly and rushed the survivors to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for emergency treatment.
Images shared from the accident scene showed the extent of the destruction. The matatu was badly damaged, with its roof partially ripped off. The bus also sustained heavy damage to its front section.
Police have since launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the accident. Both vehicles involved were towed to a nearby police station for further inspection as part of the ongoing probe.
The Nairobi-Mombasa Highway has increasingly become a hotspot for fatal accidents. Just days before this tragedy, other lives were lost in separate crashes along the same road. Safety experts warn that the highway’s heavy traffic, combined with careless driving, continues to put road users at risk.
Authorities continue to urge drivers to exercise caution, obey traffic rules, and avoid dangerous driving behaviors to prevent further loss of life.
