Bukayo Saka scored a brilliant opening goal at Wembley. Eberechi Eze came from the bench to score the second.
England continued their perfect World Cup qualifying campaign with a 2-0 win over Serbia at Wembley. Bukayo Saka opened the scoring with a superb goal, proving again that he is one of Tuchel’s most important players.
Saka now has 14 goals in 47 games for England, making him the top-scoring Arsenal player in national team history. His partnership with captain Harry Kane gives Tuchel a strong and reliable attacking base.
In the second half, coach Thomas Tuchel brought in Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, and Eberechi Eze. They changed the tempo of the match immediately.
Eze scored the second goal with a powerful finish, showing England’s depth and the quality coming from the bench.
Tuchel praised the unity in the squad, saying:
“It is not about building a starting eleven. It is about building a team… they put ego behind them for the good of the group.”
This match also helped Tuchel assess players competing for starting spots. Morgan Rogers impressed in the number 10 role while Bellingham was on the bench. Foden created dangerous moments and assisted Eze’s goal. Nico O’Reilly made a calm debut at left-back. Ezri Konsa continued to challenge for a starting place in central defence. Marcus Rashford showed improvement on the left but must sharpen his finishing to stay ahead of Anthony Gordon and Noni Madueke.
Jordan Pickford kept another clean sheet, his tenth in a row, showing England’s improved defensive discipline. The goalkeeper said the rotation in attack helps the whole team because fresh players bring new energy and ideas.
The Serbia match did not affect England’s qualification, but it gave players a chance to prove themselves. The competition for World Cup starting spots will continue on Sunday when England travels to Tirana to face Albania.
England are unbeaten in seven qualifiers, and with both experienced stars and rising talents, Tuchel’s team looks ready to challenge strongly at next year’s tournament.
