Controller of Budget report exposes huge spending in the President’s office.

A new report by Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang’o has revealed surprising levels of expenditure inside President William Ruto’s office.

The document shows that in the 2024/2025 financial year, the Executive Office of the President spent Ksh817 million on printing, translating to Ksh2.2 million every day.

These costs went into government policies, press statements, proclamations, performance contracts, and emergency communications.

The report shows that the total allocation to the President’s office stood at Ksh4 billion, with the following breakdown: Ksh1.9 billion – administration, planning, and support. Ksh750 million – leadership and coordination. Ksh1 billion – advisers, including: Ksh62m on Kenya–South Sudan advisory. Ksh97m on Economic & Social Affairs. Ksh46m on Power of Mercy. Ksh150m on strategic policy. Ksh251m on oversight of public entities.

Sources also indicated that frequent State House guests, plus glossy invitation cards printed on premium paper, may have inflated the final bill.

Apart from operational costs, the President’s office has also directed Ksh399 million to refurbishment projects. Ongoing construction has already swallowed more than Ksh1.2 billion, with completion expected by 2027.

These revelations have renewed debate on whether the Kenya Kwanza government is serious about austerity measures.

While Ruto had promised to cut wasteful spending, many Kenyans now feel that taxpayers are still paying heavily for extravagance at the highest level of government.
