Rains Expected to Return, Intensify from Monday
Rains are set to make a comeback in several parts of Kenya, starting Sunday, March 16. According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, the intensity will increase on Monday, gradually spreading across the country.
The forecast released on Saturday highlights that Nairobi and many other regions will receive light to moderate rainfall before heavier downpours set in. Kenyans are urged to prepare for changing weather conditions as showers and thunderstorms are expected in different parts of the country throughout the week.
While some areas will continue experiencing warm temperatures, the return of rains is expected to bring relief from the recent dry and dusty conditions. The weatherman has cautioned residents, especially in flood-prone areas, to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
Rains to Affect Several Regions Across Kenya
According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, several regions will receive significant rainfall as the new weather pattern takes effect. These areas include the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the South-Eastern Lowlands.
The Met Department has also warned that some areas may experience isolated heavy rainfall, leading to possible flooding and disruptions. People living in low-lying regions and near rivers are advised to remain vigilant as the rains intensify.
In its weekly forecast covering March 11 to 17, the department had predicted a reduction in rainfall midway through the period. However, the forecast now shows an increase towards the end of the week, indicating heavier rains from Sunday.
Temperatures to Remain High Despite Rains
While rains will provide relief from the dry spell, temperatures in several parts of Kenya are expected to remain high. The forecast indicates that maximum temperatures could rise above 30°C in various regions.
The combination of heavy rains and high temperatures may lead to increased humidity levels. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated and take necessary precautions to protect themselves from extreme weather conditions.
The changing weather patterns have been linked to the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), a system of clouds, rain, and storms that moves from west to east around the equator. The presence of MJO in a region usually increases the likelihood of heavy rainfall and storms.
Farmers Advised to Prepare for the Rains
Farmers across the country have been urged to take advantage of the expected rains. Director of Meteorological Services David Gikungu advised farmers to liaise with local agricultural officers to ensure they make informed decisions regarding planting and other farming activities.
The March 2025 weather outlook, which was released on February 28, predicts near-to-above-average rainfall in several regions. However, some areas will still experience below-average rainfall, meaning farmers should plan accordingly.
The return of rains is expected to boost agricultural productivity, replenish water sources, and improve soil moisture. However, excessive rainfall in some areas could lead to challenges such as waterlogging and crop damage.
Urban Areas Urged to Prepare for Possible Flooding
With heavy rains expected, urban areas such as Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu have been advised to take precautionary measures against potential flooding. Poor drainage systems in these cities often lead to water accumulation on roads and residential areas.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has encouraged local governments to clear drainage systems to prevent waterlogging. Motorists and pedestrians are also advised to be cautious while navigating flooded roads.
Flash floods remain a major concern in urban centers, especially during intense rainfall periods. Residents in affected areas should follow weather updates and emergency alerts to stay safe.
Rains Bring Relief After a Prolonged Dry Spell
Many parts of Kenya have been experiencing dry and dusty conditions, leading to challenges such as water shortages and poor air quality. The anticipated rains will provide much-needed relief, replenishing reservoirs and improving environmental conditions.
The return of rains will also help control dust pollution, which has affected air quality in major towns and cities. Additionally, farmers and herders who have struggled with water scarcity will benefit from the improved conditions.
Despite the positive impact, authorities are warning against potential weather-related risks. Landslides, flash floods, and strong winds could pose threats in certain areas, requiring preparedness from residents and local governments.
Climate Experts Explain the Changing Weather Patterns
Meteorologists attribute the current weather changes to global climate patterns, including the Madden-Julian Oscillation. Experts note that Kenya’s weather is influenced by different climate systems that contribute to fluctuations in rainfall and temperature levels.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has previously warned that extreme weather events, including droughts and heavy rains, will become more frequent due to climate change. This underscores the importance of preparedness and adaptation strategies.
With rains expected to intensify, Kenyans are encouraged to follow official weather updates and plan their activities accordingly. The Kenya Meteorological Department will continue providing regular updates to ensure people remain informed about weather changes.
