What started as a normal night out at a busy nightclub in Nakuru County ended in heartbreak after an off-duty police officer allegedly opened fire following a dispute over unpaid drinks.
According to police and witness accounts, the officer, who was said to be heavily intoxicated, got into a heated argument with the club’s owner and a staff member after refusing to clear his bill.
As the confrontation escalated, other patrons reportedly stepped in, demanding that he pay for what he had consumed.
Witnesses say the officer became aggressive and visibly unstable. Within moments, chaos broke out after he allegedly drew his firearm and started shooting inside the club, sending revellers scrambling for safety.
Two people lost their lives in the incident Ann Maina and the nightclub’s owner, Laura Kaswira. Two security guards were also shot and rushed to hospital with injuries.
In a painful twist, new details have emerged about Laura’s final moments. Reports indicate that she had been dropped at the club earlier that evening by her boyfriend.
Shortly before the shooting, the two were allegedly on a phone call that sounded tense, with Laura questioning his concern about her whereabouts and hinting at unresolved issues between them. She had no idea those would be among her last words.
Police officers and forensic teams quickly arrived at the scene, sealed off the area, and began collecting evidence as shocked patrons looked on.
A manhunt was immediately launched, and the suspect was later arrested a short distance from the club.
The tragic incident has once again sparked outrage and renewed debate around alcohol abuse, firearm control, and accountability within the security services, as grieving families demand justice for lives lost over what began as a simple bill dispute.
