22 victims of the Coptic Roundabout bus crash laid to rest in Nyakach.

Nyakach was engulfed in sorrow on Saturday as the community came together for the mass burial of 22 victims who perished in the Kisumu bus crash. Families from the Korwa and Katieno clans held a joint funeral that drew thousands of mourners in a display of unity and collective mourning.

A line of 22 hearses slowly wound its way from the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) to Naki Primary School. Along the route, residents stood in silence, many holding flowers, photographs, and handwritten notes for the departed. Gospel hymns filled the air, setting a somber tone for the heartbreaking farewell.

Survivors and relatives openly shared their grief, describing the loss as too heavy for any one family to carry alone.

“This is not just the loss of families but of an entire community,” one mourner said, echoing the collective pain that has enveloped Nyakach.

The accident, which claimed 26 lives in total, has left Kisumu County reeling. Leaders and residents alike acknowledged that the road to healing will be long. Saturday’s mass funeral not only marked the final journey for the victims but also underscored how deeply one tragedy can wound an entire region.
