The family of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has shared a touching message on what would have been his 81st birthday, thanking President William Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and several leaders from Kenya and abroad for standing with them after his death.

The message was released on January 7, a date that now carries deep meaning for the family. Instead of celebrations, the day was marked with reflection and remembrance, just months after Raila Odinga passed away on October 15, 2025.

In their statement, the family described the period following his death as extremely painful, saying the love and support they received helped them get through a very difficult time.

They thanked Kenyans from all walks of life, as well as leaders across the world, for the prayers, messages, and presence shown to them.

Special appreciation was directed to President William Ruto, with the family noting the government’s support and cooperation during the mourning period. They also acknowledged Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and Chief Justice Martha Koome for their role and compassion.

Several governors were also thanked for helping with logistics and arrangements during the funeral. Among those mentioned were Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, and Siaya Governor  ?James Orengo.

The family did not forget international leaders who reached out during the difficult moment. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi was singled out for his personal involvement in ensuring Raila Odinga was brought back home swiftly.

Former presidents Uhuru Kenyatta, Olusegun Obasanjo, Nana Akufo-Addo, Jakaya Kikwete, and African Development Bank President Akinwumi Adesina were also thanked for travelling to pay their last respects.

Doctors who attended to Raila in his final days were praised for their professionalism and care, with the family saying they did everything possible for his comfort.

The Orange Democratic Movement fraternity and staff were also acknowledged for standing with Raila during his illness and continuing to support the family afterward.

Media houses, both local and international, were thanked for covering Raila Odinga’s life and final journey with respect.

As Kenyans marked his birthday, several leaders continued to share tributes online. Cabinet Secretary Ali Hassan Joho and Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o were among those who remembered Raila as a giant of Kenya’s politics and a key figure in the country’s democratic journey.

For many, January 7 is no longer just a birthday date it is now a day to pause, remember, and reflect on the legacy Raila Odinga left behind.
