According to political expert Josphat Kamanya, there will be disastrous consequences for both the opposition and the nation as a whole if ODM Party leader Raila Odinga accepts the invitation to run for the job of President of the African Union (AU) Commission. Reliable sources claim that President William Ruto is endorsing Raila in the race for the position and ensuring that the government will back him if he is elected.
Kamanya stated that while Raila’s appointment will be a significant turning point in his career and a victory for Kenya internationally, it will also weaken the opposition, making it simpler for the government to carry out its intended agenda.
“Raila is the official leader of the opposition and also the leader of the oldest, strongest, and largest political party ODM which is the biggest party in the Azimio fraternity.”
“If the attempts by Kenya Kwanza to have Raila take up the AU job go through, it will be good for Kenya Kwanza, but that will be the saddest day for Kenyans because the opposition will fully be compromised.”
“If he leaves, who will be the government’s opposition watchdog going forward? If the ODM party chose to support the presidential candidate in 2027, what would happen and who would it be? But rather than accepting the AU position, I believe Raila would be better off concentrating on bringing his party back to life and grooming future MPs.”
