33 MCAs voted in favour of impeachment, surpassing the two-thirds threshold

Kericho Governor Erick Mutai has been officially impeached after 33 out of 47 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted in favour of his removal during a tense sitting at the County Assembly chambers.

The motion, tabled in a special session, triggered heated debates before the decisive vote. With 33 MCAs supporting the motion and 14 opposing, the assembly comfortably surpassed the two-thirds majority required by law to oust a county governor.

The MCAs accused Governor Mutai of: Gross violation of the Constitution, Abuse of office, Mismanagement of county resources

This is not the first time Mutai faced an impeachment attempt. In a previous bid, 31 MCAs voted for his removal, but the Senate dismissed the charges, allowing him to retain office.

After the voting results were confirmed electronically, the County Assembly Speaker declared the impeachment successful and announced that the case would now proceed to the Senate of Kenya.

The Speaker stated:

“The motion to remove Governor Erick Mutai has been carried. The matter is hereby referred to the Senate for further determination.”

Governor Mutai, accompanied by his legal team led by lawyer Katwa Kigen, remained calm throughout the proceedings. He now awaits the Senate’s decision, where he will be given a chance to defend himself against the allegations.

If the Senate upholds the impeachment, Kericho County will face a major political transition, with the Deputy Governor stepping in as per the Constitution of Kenya.
