HIV infections rose from 15,478 in 2024 to 20,105 in 2025.

Kenya has recorded 20,105 new HIV cases in 2025, a major increase compared to 15,478 cases in 2024. According to new estimates from the National Syndemic Diseases Control Council (NSDCC), this brings the total number of people living with HIV in the country to 1.326 million.

The report shows that Nairobi and Nyanza counties, including Kisumu and Homa Bay, continue to carry the highest burden of new cases. These areas remain national hotspots, with infection rates far above other regions.

Women and girls account for 61 per cent of the new infections. Experts link this trend to poverty, migration, lack of access to preventive drugs such as PrEP, and recurring shortages of antiretroviral treatment.

Officials say part of the rise can be explained by improved monitoring and reporting systems. However, they warn that structural and socio-economic challenges remain the main drivers of the epidemic.

In response to the alarming rise, the government has announced that it will roll out the long-acting Lenacapavir injectable from 2026. The drug, which will target high-risk populations, is expected to play a major role in slowing down the spread of HIV.

Health authorities have stressed that alongside the new injection, expanded access to PrEP and reliable drug supply systems are necessary. They argue that only sustained investments in prevention, treatment, and community support will protect vulnerable groups and help reverse the worrying trend.
