One of the judges in Diego Maradona’s death trial, Julieta Makintach, has stepped down
The trial investigating the tragic death of football legend Diego Maradona has taken a surprising turn after one of the judges, Julieta Makintach, removed herself from the case. Her decision came after both defense lawyers and plaintiffs questioned her neutrality due to her appearance in a documentary linked to the trial.
Although Makintach denied any wrongdoing, a trailer for the film showed her being interviewed inside the courtroom—a clear violation, as filming was strictly not allowed. The backlash forced the trial to pause last week and led to increasing pressure for her to step aside.
“Given the request of all parties, I have no choice but to grant the recusal,” she said, announcing her exit on Tuesday.
What Happens to the Trial Now?
Legal experts say this could seriously disrupt the case. Her replacement could either take over or the trial might start over completely—wasting weeks of court proceedings.
The case focuses on the death of Maradona, who passed away in November 2020 at 60 years old due to heart failure and fluid in the lungs. He had recently undergone brain surgery and was recovering at home, but prosecutors say his home care was poor and careless.
Seven health workers are facing charges of homicide with possible intent, which carries a prison sentence of 8 to 25 years. They’re accused of ignoring Maradona’s condition and putting him in danger through their actions.
His daughter, Gianinna Maradona, gave heartbreaking testimony about his final days, saying he was living in a sad and lonely environment, and that the people around him “seemed to care more about money than his health.”
Makintach’s involvement in the documentary has also raised talk of influence and bias, with some lawyers hinting at deeper problems. One lawyer, Mario Baudry, who represents Maradona’s ex-partner, said:
“Everyone now feels that this trial is compromised. It’s healthiest to start over from scratch.”
The court is expected to decide in the coming days how to move forward with the case.
