Immaculate Nekesa
Immaculate Nekesa, known as Ashley Magero, had been absent from class for two days, prompting concern among her classmates.
Ronnie Otieno, head of student welfare, in an exclusive interview with TUKO.co.ke stated that Ashley’s peers grew worried when she didn’t attend a practical lesson on Friday, October 11.
How did activist Ashley die?
Upon observation, it was revealed that the cooking gas was still on, along with a pot of burnt tea and a jiko used for boiling meat.
Otieno speculated that suffocation from the airless room could have led to her tragic demise.
“It seems she was trying to reach the door but was overwhelmed. She likely suffocated from the jiko,” he added.
Ashley’s family was notified, and her body was transferred to a morgue in her home county of Bungoma.
The news of Ashley’s death quickly spread on X, where users expressed their grief and demanded a thorough investigation. Many believe that her death is suspicious, given her active role in the protests against the controversial finance bill. Some users suggested that there might be foul play involved, pointing to the recent deaths of other young activists.
Initial observations suggested that Ashley might have suffocated due to the unventilated room filled with fumes from the jiko. Otieno speculated that she was likely trying to reach the door but was overwhelmed by the smoke. This explanation, however, has not quelled the suspicions and anger among her peers and the broader community.
One user, George IQ Watson, commented, “Probably didn’t even know a Jiko would kill her but Ruto must go was her speciality. THANK GOD she didn’t get a chance to contaminate the gene pool with that level of ignorance”1. Another user, Kitambo, insisted, “Dci must be involved here”1. These reactions reflect a deep mistrust in the official narrative and a call for justice.
