Househelp Accused of Stealing Employer’s Valuables

Police in Nairobi have arrested a househelp accused of stealing $4,000 (Ksh518,000), family passports, foreign national IDs, gold coins, and other valuables from her employer. The suspect, identified as Rita Akinyi Yohana, was also linked to the theft of Diwali statues, a hard disk, a pen drive, perfumes, and bank locker keys, among other personal belongings.

Arrest in Kawangware and Recovery of Stolen Items

The case was reported at Spring Valley Police Station on March 11, 2025, prompting an investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Authorities revealed that Akinyi, who had worked for the family for 15 months, allegedly stole a safe containing the valuables. She was eventually tracked down to the Congo-Maumau area in Kawangware, where detectives recovered several stolen items, including 29 one-hundred-dollar notes, assorted Indian Rupees, perfumes, and women’s purses.

Safe Retrieved from River Maumau

During the investigation, police discovered that the stolen safe had been professionally removed from a wardrobe where it had been securely fastened with screws. Akinyi later admitted to disposing of the safe in River Maumau after taking its contents. With the help of local divers, detectives recovered the empty safe from the riverbed.

Suspect in Custody Pending Arraignment

Akinyi is currently being held in police custody as authorities finalize the case. The recovered items have been preserved as evidence, and she is expected to be arraigned soon.
