Former Tahidi High Actress Angel Waruinge Opens Up on Depression and Alcohol Struggles

Angel Waruinge, popularly known as Miss Morgan, battled depression during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Former Tahidi High actress Angel Waruinge has revealed that she struggled with severe depression during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In an interview with Alex Mwakideu, Waruinge admitted that she turned to alcohol to cope with the pressure of fame, societal expectations, and personal struggles.

“Between 2018 and 2021, I could count the days I did not drink,” she confessed.

She said her struggles pushed her close to suicidal thoughts, though she never attempted to take her own life. Instead, she realised that alcohol was only a harmful escape that worsened her situation.

The turning point came when Waruinge decided to be honest with herself and those close to her.

“The first person I called was my mother. I told her, ‘This is not me,’” she said.

Her mother stood by her side, encouraging her to seek professional help. When COVID-19 restrictions eased, she began therapy, a step she credits for saving her life.

Waruinge now cautions against chasing perfection and living under societal pressure. She emphasised that acceptance and self-compassion are key to overcoming struggles.

“Calm down,” she advised. “Society has expectations, but you don’t have to destroy yourself trying to meet them.”

Her story adds to Kenya’s growing conversation on mental health, a subject long stigmatized but now receiving more attention as public figures open up.
