Former Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Susan Nakhumicha has opened up about her life after being dismissed from President William Ruto’s Cabinet in 2024. She disclosed that she has now ventured into farming and sells cabbages for livelihood.
Nakhumicha shared her experience while speaking at the funeral service of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati in Trans Nzoia on Friday, March 7. She revealed that she first learned of her dismissal through television and noted that many Kenyans celebrated the announcement.
Nakhumicha Reveals She Learned of Her Sacking on TV
During her speech, Nakhumicha explained that she, like other Cabinet members, found out about her sacking through a televised announcement by President William Ruto. She highlighted that this was a stark contrast to past regimes, where such changes were made through radio broadcasts.
“I was the Minister of Health, and the Gen Z movement led to my downfall. The Bishop preached and reminded us that during Moi’s era, announcements were made on the radio. For us, it was done on TV. I just sat and watched as the entire Cabinet was dismissed, and many Kenyans celebrated,” she remarked.
Her statement reflected on the political upheaval in 2024, where the Gen Z-led protests influenced major governmental decisions, including the dissolution of Ruto’s Cabinet.
Nakhumicha Ventures Into Farming and Sells Cabbages
Following her abrupt exit from government, Nakhumicha turned to agriculture to sustain herself. She revealed that she is now a full-time farmer, primarily growing cabbages in Cherangany, Trans Nzoia County. The former CS admitted that she has not secured any formal employment since leaving office and relies on farming as her main source of income.
“Since that day, I have had no job. I turned to God and decided to focus on something productive. Right now, I am farming. I grow and sell cabbages in Cherangany. Please continue praying for me so that I can have a testimony to share in the future,” she stated.
Her transition from a high-ranking government official to a farmer showcases resilience and adaptability in the face of political setbacks.
Gen Z Protests Led to Nakhumicha’s Cabinet Exit
Nakhumicha acknowledged that her removal from office was largely influenced by the 2024 Gen Z-led protests, which called for accountability and policy changes in the health sector. The protests, driven by young Kenyans, criticized the government’s handling of healthcare issues and demanded reforms, which eventually led to a Cabinet reshuffle.
While reflecting on the protests, she admitted that the public reaction to her sacking was overwhelmingly positive, signaling the dissatisfaction Kenyans had with the health sector’s management under her leadership.
Nakhumicha Hints at a Political Comeback in 2027
Despite her current focus on farming, Nakhumicha hinted at a potential return to politics in the 2027 General Election. While she did not specify which seat she intends to contest, she emphasized that no political position is reserved for anyone.
“I do not want to discuss politics right now, but I will say this—there is no seat that belongs to anyone,” she declared, signaling her political ambitions.
Her statement suggests that she might be eyeing a leadership position, possibly at the county or national level, as she seeks to reestablish herself in the political arena.
Public Reactions to Nakhumicha’s New Venture
Kenyans have had mixed reactions to Nakhumicha’s new path in farming. Some have praised her for embracing agriculture, which remains a key sector in Kenya’s economy. Others, however, view her transition as a reflection of the instability that can come with government service.
Her story has resonated with many, particularly those who face career uncertainties and must adapt to new realities.
