Elon Musk is initiating a new political party.
On July 5, the Tesla founder and former advisor to President Donald Trump disclosed via X that he has launched the America Party. This announcement came after he conducted a poll on the platform just a day prior, asking participants if they sought independence from what some term as a two-party (or uniparty) system. The poll garnered over 1.2 million responses, with 65.4% indicating support for establishing an alternative political organization.
In his follow-up message on Saturday about launching the America Party, Musk declared, “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and graft, we live in a one-party system rather than a democracy. Today marks the formation of the America Party aimed at restoring your freedom.”
On Saturday, Musk also shared a meme featuring a two-headed snake alongside the caption “End the Uniparty,” which he affirmed with a simple “Yes.”
On June 30, Musk had indicated that if Congress—dominated by Republicans—approved Trump’s contentious spending bill—which he has harshly criticized—he would swiftly establish and fund the America Party to challenge Republican lawmakers.
“If this outrageous spending bill passes, I will form the America Party immediately,” he posted on X. “Our nation needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that citizens truly have a VOICE.”
Earlier in June, Musk had already hinted at creating a third political party. On June 5, he ran another poll on X asking whether it was time for an entirely new political party in America that genuinely reflects centrist viewpoints.
Musk wielded considerable influence as one of Trump’s principal advisors during his initial presidency phase and was appointed head of the controversial Department of Government Efficiency aimed at reducing federal workforce size and shutting down government agencies.
However, following his departure from administrative roles on May 30 due to differing opinions regarding government spending legislation—a decision Musk criticized as undermining his objectives—their relationship deteriorated rapidly.
The two have since exchanged public criticisms through social media beginning June 5 and have maintained an adversarial relationship ever since.
