Elon Musk unveils a new political group dubbed the America Party on X.
Billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new political outfit, the America Party, promising to challenge what he calls a broken two-party system in the United States. The announcement came via a post on his social media platform X, where he claimed the move was long overdue.
This bold political step follows a very public fallout between Musk and his former ally, Donald Trump. Their friendship soured after Musk quit the Trump administration and openly criticised the president’s spending bill. Now, Musk says the US operates like a “one-party state” when it comes to wasteful government practices.
“Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,” Musk declared in his Saturday post, referencing a previous poll he conducted where users voted in favour of forming a new party.
While the idea has stirred attention, it remains uncertain if the American Party has been legally registered with the Federal Electoral Commission. Musk himself, born in South Africa, cannot run for president—raising questions about who will lead this political vehicle.
Until recently, Musk was a key Trump ally, joining campaign rallies, supporting him financially, and even serving as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a Trump-created agency. He donated a massive $250 million to Trump’s re-election efforts.
But the relationship turned sour after Trump passed a sweeping tax-and-spend bill that Musk criticised for ignoring climate priorities, a direct hit to Tesla and other Musk-led clean energy ventures.
Trump didn’t hold back. On Truth Social, he accused Musk of being addicted to subsidies and even hinted at launching investigations into the billionaire’s companies.
“Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa,” Trump wrote.
With no official leader named and no confirmation of legal registration, the America Party remains more of a headline than a political machine for now. But in a landscape already full of tension, Musk’s move has injected new drama into America’s political scene.
All eyes now shift to how seriously this new party will be taken or if it will collapse before it ever truly begins.
