Elkann Siblings Pay €175M to Settle Italian Inheritance Tax Dispute

John, Lapo, and Ginevra Elkann reach €175 million tax deal with Italy’s Revenue Agency

According to the family’s official statement, the settlement does not imply any legal responsibility or wrongdoing, even partially. The goal, they added, was to bring closure to what had become a long and emotional family and financial saga.

The deal halts a high-profile probe into whether the siblings failed to report certain inherited assets for taxation.

This dispute comes amid an ongoing inheritance fight between the Elkann children and their mother, Margherita Agnelli, over the late Gianni Agnelli’s estate. Gianni, a towering figure in Italy’s post-war economy, left behind wealth that is still shaping Italian industry through the family’s holding company, Exor.

Exor controls global giants such as Ferrari, Stellantis, Juventus FC, and more.

In 2023, Italian authorities froze nearly €75 million in assets from several individuals, including the Elkann siblings, as part of the same tax probe. It’s unclear if this latest settlement will fully resolve the legal troubles.

Turin prosecutors are still engaged in separate proceedings, and whether criminal charges will follow remains an open question.
