Kipchoge’s Quest for London Glory
Eliud Kipchoge, 40, is set to return to the London Marathon in April 2025, aiming to claim his fifth victory in the prestigious race. Kipchoge, who last competed in London in 2020, has an unmatched legacy with four wins in 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019.
Despite facing challenges, including a mid-race drop-out at the Paris Olympics, Kipchoge remains optimistic. “Sport is full of challenges,” he said. “I’m still working hard to get better and compete with the youngest people.”
Elite Field
The 2025 London Marathon will feature an exceptional lineup. Women’s world record holder Ruth Chepngetich, Olympic champion Sifan Hassan, and silver medallist Tiger Assefa will headline the women’s race, with Eilish McColgan making her debut.
In the men’s race, British hopes rest on Emile Cairess, who could challenge Mo Farah’s British record. Olympic triathlon champion Alex Yee will also compete.
CEO Hugh Brasher expressed excitement, calling this year’s field “the greatest elite field in the history of the London Marathon.”
A Legendary Career
Kipchoge’s marathon achievements are unparalleled. His official personal best of 2:01:09 is the second-fastest in history, and he famously broke the two-hour barrier in 2019 under special conditions.
With Olympic triumphs in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 and an unbeaten streak from 2014 to 2022, Kipchoge’s dominance is unmatched. However, his 2020 London Marathon finish in eighth place remains a rare blemish in his storied career.
Brasher praised Kipchoge’s impact, stating, “His incredible stretch of dominance in marathon racing makes him the greatest athlete we have ever seen.”
Future Plans
Kipchoge has yet to announce his retirement plans, stating he will reveal his intentions after the 2025 London Marathon. For now, he remains focused on inspiring others and continuing his legendary career.
