Cyril Ramaphosa receives Madlanga Commission interim report
President Cyril Ramaphosa has received the interim report of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System, presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya has confirmed.
The submission of the interim report comes three months after KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi testified before the Commission at the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College in September.
Will study the report
Magwenya said President Ramaphosa will study the report while the Commission, which is currently in recess, prepares to hear further testimony from both new witnesses and individuals who have previously appeared before it.
“President Ramaphosa has expressed his appreciation for the interim report, as well as his expectation that the Commission will, in line with its terms of reference, refer actions believed to constitute criminal acts for prosecution,” Magwenya said.
The Commission has, to date, heard evidence from 37 witnesses over 45 days of hearings, which included public, partially public and one in-camera session.
Will not be made public
While the interim report is expected to provide an indication of the nature and extent of any challenges within the criminal justice system, its contents will not be made public.
However, the final report will be made public, it has been confirmed.
The Madlanga Commission was established to investigate allegations of criminality, political interference and corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system.
