Bus Accident in Tanzania: At least 38 individuals have lost their lives following a tragic collision between a bus and a minibus in northern Tanzania, which resulted in both vehicles catching fire, as confirmed by the Tanzanian presidency on Sunday.
The deadly incident took place on Saturday evening in the town of Sabasaba within the Kilimanjaro region.
An official announcement made on June 29 revealed that the catastrophe began when a tyre on the bus exploded, leading the driver to lose control and collide with an approaching minibus.
“The crash resulted in 38 fatalities, including two women,” stated the presidency. Additionally, it was reported that 28 others were injured during the event.
The aftermath was particularly harrowing, with authorities indicating that 36 of the deceased were burned beyond recognition. Six injured individuals are currently receiving medical care at a hospital.
This incident has again highlighted Tanzania’s concerning road safety issues. Road accidents frequently occur in the country and are often linked to inadequate vehicle maintenance, irresponsible driving practices, and insufficient enforcement of traffic regulations.
According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO) from 2018, an estimated 13,000 to 19,000 people died in road-related incidents in Tanzania during 2016—a significantly higher number than the official government figure of 3,256.
It remains unclear whether the government will initiate any further investigations into this latest accident.
