Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, Hassan Joho, has openly declared his support for William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a public gathering in Mombasa on Tuesday, January 7, 2026, the former Mombasa governor said Coast leaders had reached a consensus to back President Ruto for two consecutive terms.

“As Coast leaders, we have agreed to support President Ruto for two terms without interruption. Ruto deserves two terms mbili bila break,” Joho told a cheering crowd.

The Swahili slang phrase quickly drew attention, underscoring Joho’s call for unity and unwavering loyalty to the President.

His remarks come at a time when speculation persists over internal divisions within the opposition, particularly ODM’s leadership.

Joho’s endorsement has sparked mixed reactions across the political divide. Critics have branded him an opportunist and accused him of betraying the opposition cause.

However, supporters argue that his move is strategic, citing his significant influence in mobilising votes at the Coast.

The phrase “mbili bila break” has since gained traction on social media, fuelling debate over Joho’s political realignment from a long-time opposition figure to a key ally of Ruto’s broad-based administration.

In recent years, Joho has increasingly positioned himself as a bridge between the Coast region and the national government. Political analysts note that his stance mirrors comments he made in 2025, when he hinted at backing Ruto’s leadership through 2032 while quietly nurturing his own long-term presidential ambitions.

Some commentators view Joho’s support as a pragmatic effort to secure development projects and stronger representation for the Coast within the current administration.

As Kenya edges closer to the 2027 elections, Joho’s remarks signal the possible emergence of a new Valley Coast political alliance, one that could significantly reshape the country’s electoral landscape.
