‘Pure Betrayal!’ Western Kenya Residents Angry After President William Ruto Fails to Attend Cyrus Jirongo’s Burial 2027 Votes at Risk

Western Kenya people have been left unhappy with President Ruto recent desicion not to attend the famous politician from there Cyrus Jirongo burial.

President William Ruto’s absence from the burial of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo has sparked sharp political debate, particularly in Western Kenya.

The controversy intensified after NRA Party Secretary General Amemba Magufuli publicly criticised the president, describing his failure to attend the funeral as a “betrayal.”

His remarks have since gone viral on social media, drawing strong reactions from Luhya leaders and voters.

Magufuli argued that Ruto once enjoyed a close political relationship with Jirongo during the early days of the Moi era.

According to him, the late politician played a key mentorship role in Ruto’s rise, making the president’s absence at the burial emotionally and politically significant.

In a strongly worded warning, Magufuli claimed that the Luhya community is deeply angered by what they perceive as disrespect toward one of their own.

He suggested that the sentiment could translate into political consequences ahead of the 2027 General Election.

“Luhyas are angry and may not vote for him,” Magufuli stated, adding that the burial was a missed opportunity for Ruto to demonstrate humility and loyalty to former allies.

While President Ruto did not attend the funeral in person, the government was represented by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who delivered an official condolence message.

However, critics argue that representation was insufficient given Jirongo’s political stature and history.

The burial itself attracted several high-profile leaders, including former President Uhuru Kenyatta, whose presence further fueled comparisons and political interpretation of Ruto’s absence.

Political analysts note that funerals of influential figures often carry symbolic weight in Kenyan politics.

Decisions around attendance are closely watched and can shape public perception, especially in politically sensitive regions.

As the 2027 race slowly takes shape, the fallout from Jirongo’s burial highlights the delicate balance President Ruto must maintain between state responsibilities and personal political relationships.

Whether the backlash will have lasting electoral consequences remains to be seen, but the debate has already exposed underlying tensions between the presidency and parts of the Western Kenya voting bloc.
