United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary-General Cleophas Malala has sparked a heated national debate after making controversial remarks targeting the Kisii community during a recent political address.

In a circulating video clip, Malala is heard saying, “Wakisii mnatuangusha sana. Naskia huko Kisii mnajua kuroga, si mroge huyu Kasongo tumalize mambo yake mara moja jameni.”

The comments, which many have interpreted as reckless and ethnically insensitive, were made in reference to political rival Kasongo, whom Malala accused of constantly undermining UDA’s efforts on the ground.

His remarks have since drawn sharp criticism from leaders across the political divide, civil society groups, and members of the Kisii community, who say the statement promotes harmful stereotypes and fuels unnecessary ethnic tensions.

Several Kisii leaders condemned the remarks as disrespectful and unbecoming of a national party official.

They urged Malala to retract the comments and issue a public apology, arguing that such statements risk reopening historical wounds and undermining the country’s efforts toward unity and cohesion.

Human rights activists have also weighed in, warning that political leaders must refrain from using tribal insinuations humorous or otherwise in public discourse, especially in a country that has previously suffered politically instigated ethnic conflicts.

They cautioned that normalising such rhetoric can destabilise communities and fuel mistrust.

Despite the mounting criticism, Malala has remained silent on the matter, with neither a clarification nor an apology issued by his office by the time of publication.

Political observers note that the situation may escalate if not addressed promptly, particularly given the highly charged atmosphere ahead of upcoming political activities.

Community leaders in Kisii have urged calm, calling on residents to reject provocation and allow proper channels to address the issue.
