Former President Uhuru Kenyatta attended the signing of the Washington Accords for Peace between Rwanda and the DRC. The accords aim to end decades of conflict in the Great Lakes region.

The signing took place at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) in Washington, D.C., on Friday, December 5, 2025. Leaders from Africa and the US witnessed the event.

US President Donald Trump described the accords as a “historic agreement that will end one of the longest-running conflicts anywhere in the world.”

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame and DRC President Félix Tshisekedi signed the agreement, which outlines: A permanent ceasefire, Disarmament of rebel groups, Safe return of refugees, Economic cooperation and integration

President Tshisekedi praised mediators and African leaders, particularly former President Kenyatta and Angola’s President João Lourenço, for initiating the Nairobi and Luanda peace tracks.

“These two great Africans were there at the beginning; they started the Nairobi and Luanda peace processes,” Tshisekedi said.

The accords combine a declaration of principles, a peace agreement, and an economic framework, offering a roadmap to end decades of violence, displacement, and mistrust.

President Kagame reaffirmed Rwanda’s commitment to consolidating the peace agreement with African partners, aiming for lasting security and stability in the region.
