Reports from international media indicate that Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embaló has been arrested by armed men in what appears to be a major power shift in the West African nation.

According to Radio France Internationale (RFI), army officers have announced that they have taken full control of the country “until further notice,” effectively suspending the civilian government.

The situation remains tense in the capital, Bissau, as military vehicles patrol key roads and government buildings remain under heavy guard. Communication lines in and out of the country are reported to be restricted, heightening fears of instability.

Regional observers have described the situation as a “serious threat to democracy” in a nation that has experienced multiple coups since gaining independence.

International organisations, including the African Union and ECOWAS, are expected to issue statements condemning the takeover and calling for the president’s immediate release.

As of now, there has been no official comment from the presidency or confirmation of Embaló’s whereabouts, but reports suggest the situation is rapidly evolving.
