Abel Mutua was robbed in Kahawa West by armed youths.

Popular Kenyan filmmaker and storyteller Abel Mutua, also known as Mkurugenzi, has shared his shocking encounter with thugs who robbed him in Kahawa West, Nairobi.

In a post on his Instagram Stories, Abel revealed that a group of young men ambushed him and took away his iPhone 16 Pro Max and Bose headphones. Despite the frightening situation, he thanked God for protecting his life.

“Wueh! Sema Kimeumana!! The young men at Kahawa West walinikaribisha jiji jana. iPhone 16 Pro Max is gone, and Bose Headphones are gone as well. But cha muhimu ni despite the massive knives they were carrying, walinibakishia uhai,” he wrote.

Abel added that the incident happened right opposite the KUTRRH Morgue, noting the irony of nearly facing death next to a mortuary.

“Ironically, they jumped me right across from the KUTRRH Morgue. Wangeamua ningeamkia kwa fridge leo. Wabarikiwe for sparing a life,” he joked.

His message, though laced with humour, reflected deep gratitude and relief for surviving what could have easily turned fatal.

After the incident, Abel said he would be taking a short break to recover from the experience, humorously writing,

“Haya! Mtaniruhusu nilale mteja siku kadhaa.”

The post quickly went viral, with fans and fellow creatives flooding his comments section with messages of sympathy and encouragement. Many thanked God for his safety, with one fan commenting, “The gadgets can be replaced, but your life is priceless.”

Social media users praised Abel’s ability to maintain positivity even after such a traumatic event.

“Only Abel can go through an armed robbery and still turn it into a joke. That’s the Mkurugenzi spirit,” one user wrote on X.

Others admired his calmness, saying his sense of humour helped soften what could have been a tragic story.

Abel Mutua is a renowned Kenyan actor, scriptwriter, and filmmaker known for his roles in Tahidi High and The Real Househelps of Kawangware. He also co-founded Phil-It Productions alongside director Philip Karanja, producing some of Kenya’s most popular shows.

Even in this frightening moment, his words, “Wabarikiwe for sparing a life”, remind fans why he remains one of Kenya’s most loved creatives: a man who can find laughter and gratitude even in danger.
