A Rift Valley resident mocked Matiang’i’s record as Education CS.

A man from Rift Valley left people talking after he openly questioned the legacy of former Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i. Speaking at a baraza, he laughed off the reforms often linked to Matiang’i, claiming the only real change he noticed was the directive that turned all school buses yellow.

“Watu husema Matiang’i alifanya kazi kubwa akiwa Education CS. Lakini mbona mimi naona mambo yake yote yalikuwa kupaka magari ya shule njano?” the man asked, leaving the crowd in stitches.

Despite the criticism, Matiang’i is remembered for several strong reforms between 2015 and 2018. His actions included: Tight rules that stopped exam cheating in KCSE and KCPE. Introduction of the digital learning program in primary schools. A clear and streamlined school calendar with faster marking of exams. Enforcing safety, including making buses yellow for easy recognition.

These reforms earned him praise as a no-nonsense leader, though some viewed him as too strict.

Observers say the man’s comments are more than just jokes. They may reflect the wider political mood, where citizens are revisiting the Jubilee era and comparing it to Kenya Kwanza’s promises.

Even though Matiang’i has stayed away from the political limelight after leaving office, his name keeps coming back whenever discussions on past leadership arise.
