KSh9.46 billion HELB funds released today.
The Ministry of Education has today released KSh9.46 billion in Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) funds to support 309,178 university students across the country.
Out of the total amount, KSh5.76 billion will cover tuition fees, while KSh3.7 billion has been set aside for students’ upkeep. The move is expected to ease the financial challenges many learners face, especially after delays in loan processing.
Education stakeholders welcomed the release, saying timely funding is important for students to continue with their studies. Many noted that learners from low-income families depend fully on HELB to remain in school.
The government assured that it remains committed to supporting higher education and will not allow any deserving student to miss university education due to a lack of funds.
HELB loans have long been a lifeline for students, helping cover both fees and living expenses. This latest disbursement comes at a time when several universities had raised concerns about unpaid fees and called on the government to speed up loan processing to keep institutions running smoothly.
