Arsenal sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon for €73 million
Arsenal have completed the signing of Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon in a deal worth up to €73 million (£64 million). The 27-year-old penned a five-year contract after being impressed by Arsenal’s 5-1 win over his former team in the Champions League last season.
Speaking after the move, Gyokeres said the decisive moment came when he faced Arsenal in Europe.
“When I played against Arsenal, I could feel it was a very strong team. That made me choose Arsenal,” he said.
“It just felt like the right club for me — from the way they play, to what I heard from Mikel [Arteta] and [sporting director] Andrea Berta.”
The deal includes an initial €63 million fee, with an extra €10 million in performance-related add-ons. Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta personally led the negotiations in Lisbon.
Gyokeres had previously refused to report for pre-season with Sporting, prompting a standoff with the club’s president, Frederico Varandas. Despite this tension, Arsenal pushed ahead to finalise the transfer.
Gunners boss Mikel Arteta welcomed the new forward, praising his qualities:
“Viktor is quick, powerful, intelligent in the box, and a clinical finisher. He’s exactly the type of threat we need up front.”
Arsenal had targeted RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko earlier in the window, but after missing out, shifted full focus to Gyokeres — who has now become the club’s sixth signing of the summer.
Gyokeres joins other summer signings, including Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke, and Cristhian Mosquera. With a reinforced squad and two back-to-back title challenges behind them, Arsenal hope this new addition could be the final boost they need to secure Premier League glory.
