Safaricom has crossed 50 million mobile users in Kenya.

Safaricom PLC has hit a major target, recording over 50 million customers on its mobile network in Kenya. The announcement comes just months before the company celebrates its 25th anniversary in October 2025. This growth reflects the strong bond the company has built with Kenyans since its early days in 2000.

When Safaricom launched 25 years ago, it had only 17,000 users. Today, it’s the country’s largest mobile operator. CEO Peter Ndegwa credited this success to years of consistent customer-centred strategies and loyalty from Kenyans.

“We’re grateful to the over 50 million Kenyans who trust us. This shows the strong relationship we’ve nurtured over time,” Ndegwa stated.

Part of the telco’s rise has been its creative services. Campaigns like Sambaza Furaha and M-PESA Sokoni have helped improve customer experience by offering rewards and making services more accessible across the country.

Safaricom’s footprint goes beyond Kenya. In Ethiopia, the company has already gained over 10 million users by July 2025. This is part of its wider vision to become a top tech-driven brand in Africa by 2030.

As Safaricom prepares for the next chapter, Dr. Ndegwa said the focus will shift to more personalised services and contributing to Kenya’s digital economy. He also mentioned their dedication to building a positive impact across communities.

“We’re planning to make our services more personal and support the country’s digital journey,” Ndegwa explained.

Safaricom’s impact is not limited to technology. The firm pumped KSh 722 billion into the economy last year and supported more than 1.28 million jobs. Through its Safaricom and M-PESA foundations, over 8 million Kenyans have benefited in areas like education, health, and entrepreneurship.

Safaricom’s journey from a small operator to a giant with 50 million users shows the power of trust, innovation, and putting people first. As it marks 25 years, the telco promises even greater things for the future of Kenya and Africa.
