Vybz Kartel was officially crowned King of Dancehall at Reggae Sumfest 2025 in Montego Bay.

After more than a decade away from the big stage, Vybz Kartel made a powerful return at Reggae Sumfest 2025 in Montego Bay, where he was officially crowned the King of Dancehall. The moment was charged with emotion and celebration, drawing a packed audience eager to witness history. His performance marked his first major appearance since his release from prison in 2024, following the overturning of his conviction.

Stepping on stage in the early hours of Saturday, Kartel kicked off his hour-long set with MoBay Anthem, paying tribute to the city hosting the festival. Dressed in a Jamaica-themed jersey, dark shades, and signature chains, he owned the stage with hits like My Scheme, Send Fi Mi Army, and Love Dem, closing with the spiritually reflective God Is the Greatest.

A highlight of the night came when fellow dancehall heavyweight Spice presented Kartel with a red velvet, jewel-studded crown. Seated on an elegant throne, he accepted the crown with pride as the crowd erupted in cheers.

“It’s a joy fi sit down yah suh inna mi owna country and the people a seh, ‘Worl’ Boss, yuh finally officially deserve it,’” said Kartel in front of the roaring crowd.

While embracing his new title, Kartel made sure to honour those who came before him. He gave credit to Bounty Killer for helping launch his career and saluted fellow veterans such as Buju Banton, Ninja Man, and Beenie Man, the previous holder of the King of Dancehall title from Sumfest 2009.

“Big up to Beenie Man, the former king,” Kartel noted, earning loud approval from fans.

Speaking before the event, Kartel described the crowning moment as simply “a formality,” saying his legacy was already written.

“I’ve been the king before I went to prison, and the record is there to show,” he stated. “But what excites me is to perform for Jamaicans. One Jamaica. One dancehall. Never forget.”

Kartel’s musical journey doesn’t stop here. He’s expected to headline Reggae Fest Baltimore on July 26, followed by a major performance at New York’s Barclays Centre in August. His global comeback tour is now fully underway.

The World’s Boss is back, crowned, celebrated, and firmly seated on the dancehall throne.
