A deal in principle has been struck, with Rashford expected to join Barça on loan with an option to buy, giving the Catalan club a low-cost chance to revive the 27-year-old’s career.
Rashford last played for United in the Manchester Derby on 15 December 2024. New boss Ruben Amorim cited a lack of effort and poor attitude, which led to Rashford being sidelined. He was later loaned to Aston Villa in January, where he managed only 2 goals in 17 games despite earning an England recall.
Even after United finished a disastrous 15th in the league, Rashford was among five players told to train away from the main squad this summer.
Barcelona, having missed out on both Nico Williams and Luis Diaz, have turned to Rashford as a flexible option for their left wing. The club’s financial struggles limit major transfers, and Rashford’s loan presents a low-risk opportunity.
“It’s a gamble, but one that could pay off big.” Andy West, Spanish football analyst
New coach Hansi Flick is said to admire Rashford’s ability to play across the front line and sees him as a potential partner or rotation option for Lewandowski, especially with the Polish striker turning 37.
Despite Rashford’s experience of 138 goals in 426 games for United and 17 in 62 appearances for England, his form has dipped apart from a stellar 2022/23 season.
“Barcelona are aware this isn’t a guaranteed success.” Simon Stone, BBC Sport
But with limited finances and ongoing injury issues in the squad, Barça hope the England international can rediscover his spark in Spain. He is expected to join an attack that includes Lewandowski, Raphinha, and rising star Lamine Yamal.
Rashford’s move will be finalised in the coming days, with the player already said to be in contact with Barça representatives.
