China Reaffirms Position Following Trump’s Announcement on TikTok Acquisition
Beijing has reiterated its stance regarding TikTok in light of U.S. President Donald Trump’s declaration concerning a “wealthy group” intending to purchase the popular social media application, an acquisition that would require approval from the Chinese government.
During a press briefing streamed live from Beijing on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stated, “China reiterates its position… I have nothing to add,” without elaborating further.
The Chinese government has previously recognized TikTok’s positive contribution to job creation and consumer expenditure within the United States.
In January, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun commented that business transactions and acquisitions ought to be made independently based on market dynamics. He also emphasized that if Chinese companies are involved, such deals must comply with Chinese laws and regulations.
Trump mentioned during a Fox News interview broadcast on Sunday that “we have a buyer for TikTok,” suggesting he would likely need China’s approval and hinting that President Xi Jinping might grant it. He described potential buyers as “very, very wealthy people” but did not confirm whether any significant technology companies were included in this group.
Trump noted he would provide additional details “in about two weeks.” Meanwhile, there have been reports suggesting Elon Musk is considering acquiring the platform; however, Musk has refuted these claims and dismissed speculation regarding his potential involvement.
