Social media company X has announced that it will ban accounts from its monetization system that post artificial intelligence (AI)-generated war videos without disclosing their origins.

The ban will last 90 days, but will become permanent if an account repeats the violation. X executive Nikita Bier explained the decision by saying that in times of war, “it’s crucial that people have access to authentic information.”

This news goes against the trend of how the social network has been managed in recent years, since it was bought by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk in 2022: the moderation and content control systems have been progressively eliminated, transforming the platform into a place where controversial content , misinformation and violent language abound .

The post monetization system has also often been criticized: it is designed to give users who access it a share of the advertising revenue generated by the content they publish.

This—without an adequate moderation system—encourages the creation of sensational, divisive, and offensive posts, as these are the ones that receive the most engagement from other users.
