Shock and grief continue to grip the local football community following the death of Kakamega Homeboyz defender Silas Abungana, whose wife has revealed chilling details about what happened on the night he died.
According to his widow, Abungana lost his life after suffering serious head injuries during a late-night attack at his rural home in Kakamega.
The club confirmed that the defender was rushed to hospital after the incident but died minutes before midnight on Wednesday, February four.
The footballer, who joined Kakamega Homeboyz only five months earlier from Shabana FC, was regarded as a rising talent in the Kenya Premier League.
She dismissed claims by family members that the fight started over fire, saying the real cause was a long-standing land dispute and growing tension at home.
She explained that her husband had stopped sending money to his parents to build his own house.
When he later asked for land to build, a disagreement followed and tensions grew.
The widow said that when Abungana went to ask for a place to build, he disagreed with the old man, leading to a quarrel.
She added that his brother had even tried to attack her with an axe.
Now two months pregnant, she has appealed to Kenyans for help and justice as investigations continue.
Abungana’s death has sparked public debate on family conflicts, money pressure, and the safety of young athletes after turning professional.
Many Kenyans are calling for thorough investigations and accountability as the football world mourns a life cut short too soon.
