According to state-run VNExpress on Saturday, the appeal hearing will commence on Tuesday and is expected to last until April 21. Truong My Lan, 68, was sentenced to life imprisonment in October 2024 after being found guilty of three serious financial crimes.
Lan, the former head of Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB), was convicted of laundering $17.7 billion, engaging in illegal cross-border money transfers worth $4.5 billion, and committing bond fraud amounting to $1.2 billion.
Legal Battle Intensifies in Vietnam Tycoon Appeal
Despite her previous appeal against the death penalty being rejected in July 2024, Lan now seeks to challenge the life sentence from her second trial. She will be represented by a team of eight lawyers in the upcoming proceedings.
State media also reported that 27 other defendants connected to her case are appealing their sentences as well.

Lan was previously found guilty of embezzling $12.5 billion from SCB, with the total damages linked to her fraudulent activities amounting to $27 billion—equivalent to six percent of Vietnam’s 2023 GDP.
Although official records show she held only five percent of SCB shares, the court determined that she controlled over 90 percent of the bank through relatives and associates.
The fallout from her crimes left thousands of investors devastated, leading to rare public protests across the country.
