USWNT World Cup winner Crystal Dunn announces retirement after 12-year career

US forward Crystal Dunn has retired at 33. A 2019 World Cup winner and Paris 2024 Olympic champion, she earned 160 caps for the USA and also played for Chelsea, Washington Spirit and Paris Saint-Germain.

Now she’s quitting.

Even though Dunn has a year and a half left on his contract with French PSG, the news comes.

The 33-year-old American has only played sporadically for the French club and she chooses to end her career.

“I am ready to embrace the life that awaits me on the other side. I look forward to spending more time with my family and being a more present mother. This was not a decision made lightly, but one made with immense gratitude for everything I have experienced as a professional soccer player. I have grown through adversity, celebrated incredible successes and valued every part of the journey,” she writes on Instagram.

Olympic and World Championship gold

Dunn has a solid resume to say the least. She has made 160 appearances for the United States, won both World Cup and Olympic gold medals, and has been considered one of the world’s best soccer players.

“Turning the page is never easy. There is so much history and so many memories tied to places I will never experience again. Life as a professional athlete can never be fully recreated, but I look forward to continuing to impact the sport from new perspectives,” she writes.

Alongside her extraordinary playing career, Crystal played a critical role in defending the rights of professional footballers domestically through the USWNTPA, and globally through FIFPRO.

She served on both the previous and current FIFPRO Global Player Council and was a key contributor to the taskforce that helped develop FIFPRO’s Postpartum Return to Play Guide.

From helping mothers get back onto the pitch to strengthening player representation, her impact has helped push the game forward for others.
