Uganda will host the 15th EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games from December 5 to 15, 2025.
Uganda is set to host the 15th Edition of the East African Community (EAC) Inter-Parliamentary Games, a major regional event scheduled to take place between December 5 and 15, 2025.
The games will bring together legislators and parliamentary staff from all nine EAC member states, fostering closer cooperation and strengthening regional integration through sports.
Speaking to the press on Monday, October 6, 2025, the Chairperson of the Parliament Sports Club, Hon. Asuman Basalirwa, said the tournament goes beyond competition, describing it as a platform for building unity and mutual understanding.
“People complain that EAC is only known to those at the top and that the common man does not know its relevance. We will use the games to sensitise the nation on the beauty of integration,” Basalirwa said.
Basalirwa noted that the tournament, which has become a permanent feature on the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) calendar, is a powerful driver of the region’s integration process.
Anchored under Article 49 (2)(a) of the EAC Treaty, the games are meant to deepen engagement between EALA and national parliaments, allowing citizens to connect with the integration agenda through entertainment and sport.
“There are many diseases we shall avoid if we embrace physical exercise. We hope that when citizens see their representatives participate actively, they will be inspired to do the same,” he added.
Hosting the games is expected to bring significant economic benefits to Uganda. With teams and officials from all nine EAC member states, the event will attract visitors who are projected to inject over US$1 million into the economy through tourism, accommodation, and trade.
Hon. Santa Alum Ogwang, the manager of Uganda’s Parliamentary Sports Team, urged media outlets to use the event to promote the benefits of regional integration while calling on local entrepreneurs to take advantage of the games.
“This is a golden opportunity for Ugandans to showcase their products and market their businesses,” she said.
The EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games were first introduced in 2001 by EALA to raise public awareness about regional integration. They were later formalised in 2009 following a resolution by the EAC Bureau of Speakers.
Although Burundi was initially chosen to host the 2025 edition in Bujumbura, it withdrew in May 2025 due to national elections scheduled during the same period.
This year’s tournament will feature a wide range of sports, including football, netball, basketball, volleyball, athletics, tug of war, golf, and darts for Members with disabilities.
Teams from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and EALA are expected to participate in what promises to be one of the most vibrant editions in the event’s history.
