He “really doesn’t care” whether Iran, which has qualified for the final tournament in the US, Canada, and Mexico, participates or not, Trump told Politico magazine.
He continued: “I think Iran is a very beaten country. They’re on their last legs.”
Iran is scheduled to play in the World Cup in the USA from June 11 to July 19, in a group with Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt.
However, Iranian Football Federation President Mehdi Taj left the question of their participation open over the weekend following the outbreak of hostilities.
Iran was not present at the planning meeting of all World Cup teams in the USA.
“It is certain that after this attack, we cannot expect to look forward to the World Cup with hope,” Taj had said.
The situation will certainly be a factor in sporting considerations and requires a decision.
“The US regime has attacked our homeland, and this is an incident that will not go unanswered,” Taj continued.
According to Politico, Iran was the only country absent from a planning meeting of all World Cup teams in Atlanta this week.
Iran boycotted the World Cup preliminary group draw in Washington in December because the US government allegedly refused visas to three officials, including the association president, Taj.
