  • Fuel tanker incidents are common in Nigeria due to poor road conditions and vehicle maintenance.
  • Rising fuel prices following subsidy removal have pushed many Nigerians into poverty.

A fuel tanker explosion in Nigeria’s Suleja area, Niger state, claimed the lives of 77 people on Saturday. The tragedy occurred after the tanker overturned, spilling fuel. Moments later, as locals rushed to scoop the leaking fuel, the tanker ignited, killing dozens and injuring 25 others, including rescue workers.

Those injured in the explosion are receiving treatment in nearby hospitals, according to the emergency management agency.

Recurring Danger of Fuel Tanker Explosions

Fuel tanker explosions are a recurring hazard in Nigeria, driven by poorly maintained vehicles and deteriorating road infrastructure. Just two weeks ago, a similar incident in Delta state resulted in five deaths, while 153 people died in a petrol explosion in October while attempting to collect leaking fuel.

Economic Challenges and Desperate Measures

The explosion highlights the desperate measures many Nigerians are resorting to due to surging fuel prices. President Bola Tinubu’s removal of long-standing fuel subsidies has caused fuel prices to rise by over 400% in the last 18 months. While the government defends these policies as necessary for economic recovery, they have driven millions into poverty, forcing some to risk their lives for fuel.

This tragedy underscores the urgent need for improved infrastructure and policies to alleviate poverty and enhance public safety.
