Scandal at the Élysée Palace: Brigitte Macron called feminists stupid sluts

The French first lady’s harsh insult, which came in defense of a comedian accused of violence, is now being attacked by politicians, activists and celebrities, with actress Judith Godrèche expressing solidarity with the protesters. Brigitte Macron’s comment has sparked outrage in France.

Brigitte Macron, the wife of the French president, has caused a huge uproar after she called feminists who were protesting against comedian Ary Abittan “stupid sluts” backstage at a stand-up comedy show. The scandalous remark came at an event where Abittan was on his first tour since the rape allegations that were eventually dropped against him.

Brigitte Macron reportedly asked Abittan how he was doing before the performance. The comedian, who was visibly nervous, replied: “I’m scared,” likely referring to the expected protesters who could disrupt the show. To which the first lady responded:

If there are stupid bitches, we throw them out.

The footage quickly spread on social media and sparked immediate outrage.

Ary Abittan, a popular French actor and comedian, was accused of rape by a woman. The judges who led the investigation ultimately decided that there was insufficient evidence to press charges, despite the victim suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Authorities were unable to determine whether the sexual act was forced. Abittan has consistently denied the allegations, claiming that the relationship was consensual. The performance was his first public appearance since the allegations.

Brigitte Macron explains

Brigitte Macron’s office issued a statement to AFP on Monday, attempting to put the comment into context. They said the first lady’s words were a criticism of the radical methods used by protesters who disrupted and disrupted Abittan’s performance. Her office said she was not attacking feminists as a whole, but rather their aggressive tactics, which it said were damaging the actor’s comeback.

But the outrage has swept across French politics, regardless of party affiliation. “When it comes to women fighting violence against women, we don’t talk like that,” former President François Hollande told RTL on Tuesday.

French actress Judith Godrèche, who has played a central role in the fight against sexual violence in the film industry, criticized Macron on Instagram.

I’m a stupid bitch too. And I support the others

– he wrote.
