A family is demanding justice after a tragic incident at Salama Police Post in Laikipia West Constituency left one police officer dead and another injured after clash among themselves while in the line of duty.

Constable Abel Kivoto Kimanzi was fatally stabbed by his colleague, Constable Victor Chesang’ Mengich, during an altercation on Friday evening.

The verbal altercation turned into a deadly confrontation as the two officers wrestled in full view of members of the public near Salama shopping centre.

According to reports, Sergeant Wahome Muigai Muiruri, the officer in charge of the post, heard cries for help while at the shopping centre. He rushed to the scene where he found Mengich armed with a knife and struggling with Kimanzi.

Moments later, Mengich stabbed Kimanzi in the stomach, causing severe bleeding. Despite efforts to save him, Kimanzi succumbed to his injuries.

Sergeant Muigai, assisted by another officer, tried to restrain Mengich but was injured in the process. Members of the public intervened, bravely subduing the assailant and handcuffing him before rushing both men to hospital.

Muigai was treated and discharged, while Mengich was later detained at Nyahururu Police Station after receiving medical attention.

Investigations have been launched to determine what triggered the fatal dispute. The body of Kimanzi was taken to the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Kimanzi’s death is especially painful given his recent recognition. On December 9, 2025, he was among 20 officers honoured by the Chandaria Foundation for extraordinary courage and dedication during the annual Chandaria Bravery Award ceremony, presided over by Inspector General Douglas Kanja.

His family is now calling for accountability and transparency in the probe.
