RIP: Former Shinyalu MP Daniel Khamasi Dies Weeks After Cyrus Jirongo’s Passing

Kakamega County is once again in mourning following the death of former Shinyalu Member of Parliament Daniel Khamasi just few weeks after Cyrus Jirongo death.

The news of Khamasi’s passing was confirmed by the current Shinyalu MP, Fredrick Ikana, who paid tribute to the former legislator’s long service to the constituency and the wider Kakamega region.

Khamasi served as Shinyalu MP for two consecutive terms between 1997 and 2007. He was first elected on a Ford Kenya ticket before successfully defending his seat in 2002 under the NARC party.

In the 2007 general election, he lost the seat to Charles Lugano of ODM. Following his defeat, Khamasi stepped away from elective politics and chose a quiet retirement from public life.

Despite his exit from active politics, Khamasi remained a respected elder in Kakamega County. Many current leaders are said to have regularly sought his counsel on political and community matters.

In recent months, the former MP was seen meeting several senior leaders, including Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa and Senator Boni Khalwale, a sign of the influence and respect he continued to command within the region’s political circles.

Khamasi’s death comes just weeks after Kakamega County lost two other former legislators ex-Lugari MPs Cyrus Jirongo and Dr Enoch Kibunguchy deepening the sense of loss in the region.

Jirongo is scheduled to be laid to rest today at his home in Lumakanda, Lugari Constituency.

As messages of condolence continue to pour in, leaders and residents across Kakamega have described Khamasi as a calm, experienced leader whose legacy will be remembered for years to come.
