A Rift Valley senator has reportedly been conned of KSh 200,000 by a Kitui-based fraudster.

A well-known senator from the Rift Valley region is nursing embarrassment after falling into the trap of a smooth-talking con artist from Kitui. The politician, known for frequently referencing his years in the U.S., lost KSh 200,000 in a trick that has left tongues wagging in both political and public circles.

It all started when the senator was spotted at a popular Nairobi hotel discussing issues with road access to his private land. Unbeknownst to him, a conman was listening in closely.

The fraudster, described as confident and calculating, later approached the senator outside the venue. Claiming to have ties with top officials in the roads department, he introduced himself as a key influencer who could help resolve the senator’s problem.

Instead of raising suspicion, the unexpected offer intrigued the senator. The promise of a quick road upgrade to his gates sounded too convenient to ignore.

The senator, seemingly eager for a breakthrough, sent the conman KSh 200,000 via mobile money. He was told the funds would go toward mobilising a contractor and “speeding up the process.”

Moments later, the fraudster walked into a nearby MPESA agent, withdrew the money, switched off his phone, and disappeared without a trace.

The senator quickly reported the incident to the police, who are now tracking down the suspect and pushing for names of possible accomplices.

In the meantime, the story has become an inside joke among fellow lawmakers. Many are said to be privately teasing their colleague for being duped in such a dramatic fashion.

Despite the laughs, the incident serves as a serious reminder that even top officials are not immune to Nairobi’s seasoned scammers.
