Few figures in Kenya’s political landscape evoke as much intrigue, ambition and controversy as former Lugari Member of Parliament the late Cyrus Jirongo who also served as a cabinet minister.
From his humble beginnings and modest educational journey to the heights of power brokerage, wealth and influence, Jirongo’s story is one of meteoric rise and hard lessons.
The former Lugari Member of Parliament (MP) died in a tragic road accident on December 13, 2025. The highlight of his career came in the 1990s, when he led the KANU Youth wing tasked with mobilizing youth support for then-President Daniel Moi’s reelection bid.

Jirongo was born on March 21, 1961, and attended Mang’u High School between 1978 and 1981.
Cyrus Jirongo was known for his polygamous lifestyle. He had four wives from different Kenyan communities, reflecting his belief in national diversity. His wives included:
1.Joan Chemutai Kimeto (Kalenjin) – later divorced
2.Christine Nyokabi Kimani (Agikuyu)
3 Anne Kanini (Kamba)
4.Anne Lanoi Pertet (Maasai)

His personal life often attracted public attention and discussion, adding to his reputation as a larger-than-life figure.
In a bid to knit the family’s cohesion, all the children were brought up in one home, and at one point he purchased a minibus to take them to school. Jirongo did not keep a will on account that the children had maintained good relationship among themselves.
Which of Jirongo’s wives stayed with him? After his split from Caroline, Jirongo married three other women, but only one, Anne Tanui, remained by his side.

He spoke highly of Anne, describing her as the one who “had the strength to withstand this man.” He credited Anne for taking care of his children and sticking by him through thick and thin. “She persevered and took care of all my kids until they grew,” he said, acknowledging Anne’s vital role in his life.
