ODM leader Raila Odinga has been out of the public eye since early September, raising concerns among Kenyans. False social media reports claimed he had been hospitalised, sparking panic.
For several weeks, Kenyans have been on edge, questioning the health and whereabouts of ODM leader Raila Odinga. His long absence from the public scene since early September opened the floodgates to speculation, with some social media users even sharing misleading photos claiming he was hospitalised. The rumours spread quickly, causing unnecessary panic among his supporters.
In an effort to stop the growing misinformation, Raila’s wife, Ida Odinga, spoke out on October 8. She rubbished claims that her husband was in critical condition, describing the reports as false and politically motivated.
“Someone who doesn’t live with him cannot claim to know his condition better than I do,” Ida stated firmly, urging Kenyans to stop spreading lies.
Her remarks backed an earlier statement from Raila’s office confirming that the opposition leader was safe and abroad on a routine private trip.
Despite Ida’s clarification, speculation continued until Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga, Raila’s elder brother, offered more details on October 11. He revealed that Raila had indeed been “slightly unwell” but had since recovered and was regaining his strength.
Oburu further clarified that Raila was in India, contrary to online claims that he was receiving treatment in Dubai or Europe.
Raila’s spokesperson, Dennis Onyango, also weighed in, condemning the rumours as part of a calculated political misinformation campaign. He reaffirmed that the ODM leader was on his regular private trip abroad and in good health.
“The rumours are baseless and meant to cause unnecessary fear among his supporters,” Onyango said.
While Raila’s children, including Winnie Odinga, have remained silent, the statements from his wife and brother appear to have calmed public anxiety. The family maintains that Raila is well and will return to the country soon.
