Petrol Explosion Results in Two Fatalities and One Severe Injury in Mangochi
A tragic petrol explosion occurred on the night of July 13, 2025, in Mangochi, claiming the lives of a 45-year-old woman and her 13-year-old son.
The victims were identified as Jika Willard and Sherif Mussah from Chiwina Village under Traditional Authority Jalasi.
Their 20-year-old daughter, Aisha Mussah, suffered significant burns in the incident.
Reports suggest that the deceased’s elder son, known for selling illegal fuel in the Namwera area, had been storing petrol at his parents’ rented residence with their approval, even though he resided elsewhere.
On the night of the explosion, the family used a charcoal burner to warm themselves against the cold.
Unfortunately, the burner was positioned too close to the stored petrol, resulting in a catastrophic explosion that quickly consumed their home.
Jika and her son were unable to escape and sustained fatal injuries; their remains were later found severely burned, with some parts reduced to ashes. Aisha managed to flee and was initially taken to Namwera Rural Hospital before being transferred to Mangochi District Hospital for advanced care due to burns affecting both her arms and legs.
Law enforcement officials responded promptly to reports of the incident alongside medical personnel.
They confirmed the fatalities and retrieved the remains from the charred structure.
In light of this tragedy, local police have issued an urgent warning against illegal fuel vending practices, highlighting their potential to cause devastating outcomes and serious threats to community safety.
