Newcastle have started talks with Southampton for goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale
Newcastle United have entered early discussions with Southampton to sign goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. The club is exploring both a loan and permanent transfer as they prepare for a competitive season, including Champions League football.
Despite Newcastle’s flexibility, Southampton are more inclined to let Ramsdale go permanently. The Championship side invested around £18 million for him from Arsenal last August and are reportedly seeking a solid financial return after being relegated.
This move comes days after Newcastle agreed to sign James Trafford from Burnley for £27 million, only for Manchester City to activate a matching clause to bring him back. With uncertainty still surrounding the position, Ramsdale has become a top target to challenge Nick Pope for the number one spot.
Should the move go through, Ramsdale would reconnect with his former coach Eddie Howe, who managed him at Bournemouth. That familiarity might give Newcastle an edge in convincing the England shot-stopper to make the switch.
Ramsdale made 30 appearances last season, though it was a difficult campaign as Southampton finished bottom with only 12 points. The 26-year-old was last involved in the England squad in March and will be looking to stay in top-flight football to keep his international hopes alive.
Beyond the goalkeeper situation, Newcastle are also working on other areas, including planning for the potential departure of striker Alexander Isak, who is attracting attention from Liverpool. RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko is reportedly one of the options being considered as a replacement.
A deal for Ramsdale would not only bolster Newcastle’s depth but also inject more Premier League experience into a squad aiming to compete on multiple fronts this season.
