Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji has rubbished claims that he is planning to ditch Rigathi Gachagua’s DCP party, insisting he is staying put and will not join a government he says “does not listen to the people.”
Manyatta Constituency MP Gitonga Mukunji has come out strongly to dismiss growing rumours linking him to an exit from the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The speculation had gained momentum following recent high-profile defections from DCP, most notably Juja MP George Koimburi, who accused the party of betrayal and internal wrangles.
With Mukunji long viewed as one of Gachagua’s close allies in Mt Kenya, social media chatter quickly placed him next on the list.
Some reports even quoted allies of Moses Kuria suggesting that Mukunji was preparing to cross over to the ruling United Democratic Alliance, claims that have now been firmly shot down.
In videos that have since gone viral online, Mukunji addressed the issue head-on, stating that he has no intention of abandoning DCP or its leadership.
Speaking bluntly, the MP said he could not be part of a government that ignores citizens and suppresses young people.
“I can’t join a government that does not listen to the people. One that kills Gen Zs. Nitaendelea kutetea mwananchi. DCP iko imara,” Mukunji said, drawing cheers from supporters.
In another clip circulating on X, the lawmaker went further, issuing a direct warning to those predicting his defection.
“I will never dump Gachagua ahead of 2027,” he declared, a statement widely interpreted as a response to politicians pushing the narrative that DCP leaders are abandoning ship.
Mukunji’s remarks come at a critical time for Democracy for the Citizens Party, which is working to solidify its base in Mt Kenya after its formation in 2025 as a vehicle for Gachagua’s 2027 presidential ambitions.
Despite internal challenges, Mukunji has remained one of the party’s most visible mobilisers, previously spearheading consultative forums and grassroots meetings across the region.
His latest comments are now being seen as a morale boost for DCP supporters, especially amid growing political realignments as the 2027 general election slowly takes shape.
Whether the statement will calm the defections or further harden political lines remains to be seen, but for now, Gitonga Mukunji has made it clear where he stands.
